FINDING A KINDRED SPIRIT – RICHARD ATTREE, NOVELIST

Richard Attree

Richard Attree certainly qualifies as an interesting person. I met him at the online writing group, Gutsy Great Novelists Writing Studio. He reached out to me after reading that my latest work in progress is a novel about puppy mill dog rescue.Having the “tables turned” to be interviewed by a fellow author was a great experience. Here is the link to that interview: https://wooftasticbooks.com/2021/05/30/wooftastic-books-interviews-judith-hart/

Richard and his wife, Nikki, are involved in dog rescue and have published two books based on their beloved Doodle, Gizmo. NOBODY’S DOODLE and SOMEBODY’S DOODLE can be found at: https://wooftasticbooks.com

The Attrees lived in the UK, but in 2007 they moved to Tenerife, a Spanish island off the coast of Africa. They were searching for a sunny clime to enjoy their passion for windsurfing. “I’ve been a windsurfer for most of my life… It’s certainly an obsession that has taken me around the world searching for wind, waves, and adventure,” Richard says.

Richard has traveled a most fascinating road to the relaxed lifestyle he now enjoys. “I grew up in London in the 1960s – an exciting time and place to be a teenager. He left home as soon as he could and earned a degree in philosophy.

During the 1970s, Richard experimented with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll.

Composing music for the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop and playing keyboard in several jazz, rock, and soul bands took Richard away from his love of writing. “I’ve always loved books, and I wanted to be a writer, but… I got diverted into writing music rather than words.”

By the 1970s, Richard’s hair had reached its zenith. “These days there’s not much hair left,” Richard quips.

Finally, in 2019 Richard published his debut novel, TOO CLOSE TO THE WIND. The story is a philosophical thriller about a windsurfer. “Like Nick, the main character in the story, I sometimes joke that [windsurfing] is my ‘religion’,” he says.

Windsurfing and writing remain twin passions for Richard. “I’m very fortunate to live my dream… These days, I focus on writing when it’s not windy. “My motto is, ‘Keep Scribbling!’”

Fun Fact about Windsurfing:

Windsurfers can go faster than water skiers. Most recreational windsurfers sail at speeds of about 25 to 35 mph, making them the fastest sailing crafts on the open water. (Source: https://epikoo.com/windsurfing/articles/fun-facts-about-windsurfing )
